How to clean a keurig coffee maker

Keurig coffee machine is a device that is used to make a coffee. If you have the keurig machine, it is important to ensure that you regularly clean the machine for it to function well. Cleaning this machine regularly is quite simple. The best thing about it is that it doesn’t take a lot of time or need any special cleaning solutions. Cleaning the equipment will ensure you always have a great hot cup of coffee which you desired.

The keurig coffee machine is not complicated, it only needs a general maintenance any time you see it is getting grimy. The maintenance required is not complicated and expensive. For instance if you notice that their are some grinds collecting in the K-Cup holder, or if the reservoir is not smelling fresh then a proper cleaning is required. It is advisable to clean the machine approximately four times in a year. Give the machine a complete deep cleaning so that you can keep it in a tip-top shape.

How To Clean a Keurig Coffee Maker?

Cleaning a keurig coffee maker is not a hard work. Some of the items you need include; white vinegar, water, and clean dry cloth. After having all these items, then follow the following steps to clean your machine.

Step 1: Disassemble the machine

Disassembling the machine can be seen to be a simple step, but this is one of the most important step. Ensure you disassemble and wash all the removable parts. Remove the lid and water reservoir, mug stand and K-Cup holder. To remove a K-Cup holder, you grab the top of a holder using your one hand and then push up on the bottom using the other hand. This assembly will definitely release. Wash all these pieces using warm and soapy water and then dry them.

Step 2: Clean the funnel, K-Cup holder, drip plate, and drip tray

All these elements are actually dishwasher safe. So what you will do is to place them in top rack of a dishwasher and then run the machine on the standard wash setting. Remember to use a mild dish detergent. Washing the K-Cup requires you to hold it by hand and rinse it in warm to hot water. No need of additional scrubbing for general cleaning but it is important to exercise caution so that you can prevent yourself from being stabbed by a sharp needle inside the holder. If you desire, you can wash the drip plate, funnel, and dip tray by your hands. Immerse them in hot soapy water and wash them.

Step 3: Clean the exit needle.

The upper portions and inside bottom of K-Cup holder have exit needles that have three holes. Ensure that you remove all debris from the holes by simply inserting the paper clip into every hole and removing out anything that is inside.

Step 4: Clean the water reservoir and removable lid.

Removable lid and water reservoir are not dishwasher safe. So they must be washed by hands and using clean water and non abrasive cloth. Never use detergents and cleansers on these elements. This is because they can contaminate the water supply for future uses. Wipe these elements thoroughly using wet cloth and rinse them under warm to hot water. Let them air dry or dry them thoroughly using clean dish towel.

Step 5: Wipe down the outside of the maker

Using damp non abrasive cloth, wipe away any stains of water or dried coffee grounds on front side of the maker. You can also use soapy cloth if you desire for more thoroughly cleaning. Remember to rinse the soap residue off your maker afterward with the clean damp cloth. Never immerse the entire machine in water.

Step 6: Run the vinegar rinse through the maker

Using undiluted vinegar, fill the water reservoir and brew the vinegar through the device. This is a process that is also called descalling and it should be done after every three to six months. Descalling the machine removes all those excess gime sticking in the inside of the machine. Place ceramic mug around the drip tray in order to catch the vinegar which brews through the machine. Avoid using K-Cup when performing vinegar rinse.

Step 7: Perform a second vinegar rinse

Repeat the initial process of vinegar rinse, but in this time allow the vinegar to sit for some time so that you can descale your machine more thoroughly. Using the same ceramic mug, collect the vinegar rinse on a drip tray. Avoid using K-Cup also.

Step 8: Follow with the fresh water rinse

Run clean water through the brewing cycle so that you can rinse away vinegar residue. Place the ceramic mug in a drip tray so that you can catch any dispensed water. Always remember never to add K-Cup to the machine in this procedure. Fill the water reservoir using fresh and cold water. Repeat a cold water rinse up to 3 times to properly remove any remaining taste of vinegar.

Step 9: Reassemble the machine

All parts should now be reassembled into their respective places. Snap back the funnel onto the K-Cup and insert the K-Cup back to the machine. Ensure you align the arrows on top and bottom of a K-Cup with the one marked on a machine. The tabs on the holder must be on bottom and a single tap on front should be at the top.

It is recommended that users should clean tinier parts with the cloth and non abrasive detergent. Never put keurig machine in water for any reason. The funnel, K-Cup holder, drip tray, drip plate may be cleaned using warm water. The lid and water reservoir are not dishwasher safe, so it is good to clean them using your hands and air drying them. Perform cleansing brew after brewing K-Cups such as hot coffee to ensure that the K-Cup holder is residue free. Make sure you rinse all small pieces well to avoid contaminating the keurig’s water supply. Cleaning keurig coffee machine is important for effective functioning of the machine.
